INTRODUCTION
Maryssa: Hi everyone, I'm Maryssa.
Albert: And I'm Albert.
Maryssa: And welcome to Must-Know German Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 13. Asking About Time.
Maryssa: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for asking about time.
PATTERN
Maryssa: For example,
Maryssa: "When will you arrive at school?"
Albert: Wann wirst du in der Schule ankommen?
Albert: [slow] Wann wirst du in der Schule ankommen?
Maryssa: The pattern for asking about time has four elements. First, "When".
Albert: Wann.
Maryssa: Second, the verb for "will" conjugated in indicative present tense.
Albert: wirst.
Maryssa: Third, the pronoun, in this case for "you".
Albert: du.
Maryssa: And last, the predicate for "arrive at school".
Albert: in der Schule ankommen?
Maryssa: Altogether, we have... "When will you arrive at school?"
Albert: Wann wirst du in der Schule ankommen? [slow] Wann wirst du in der Schule ankommen? [normal] Wann wirst du in der Schule ankommen?
Maryssa: Start with the question word "when", followed by a conjugated verb; if you are talking about a future event, use the verb for "will". Then comes the subject that demonstrates who or what will be done or has already been done, and any more details can be added at the end to the predicate.
Albert: Wann wirst du in der Schule ankommen?
Maryssa: So remember to use the German word for "when", then use the conjugated verb and add more details about the subject you want to know more about.
Maryssa: Here is another example meaning, "When will you finish work?" First, "When".
Albert: Wann.
Maryssa: Second, the verb for "will" conjugated in present tense.
Albert: ist.
Maryssa: Third, the pronoun, in this case for "your".
Albert: deine.
Maryssa: And last, the predicate for "finish work".
Albert: Arbeit zu Ende?
Maryssa: Altogether we have...
Albert: Wann ist deine Arbeit zu Ende? [slow] Wann ist deine Arbeit zu Ende? [normal] Wann ist deine Arbeit zu Ende?
Maryssa: "When will you finish work?"
[pause]
Albert: Wann ist deine Arbeit zu Ende?
Maryssa: How do you say - "When will the train depart?" To give you a hint, "train" is...
Albert: Zug. [slow] Zug. [normal] Zug.
Maryssa: "When will the train depart?"
[pause]
Albert: Wann wird der Zug abfahren? [slow] Wann wird der Zug abfahren? [normal] Wann wird der Zug abfahren?
[pause]
Albert: Wann wird der Zug abfahren?
