INTRODUCTION |
Maryssa: Hi everyone, I'm Maryssa. |
Albert: And I'm Albert. |
Maryssa: And welcome to Must-Know German Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 12. Asking about a choice. |
Maryssa: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for asking about a choice. |
PATTERN |
Maryssa: For example, |
Maryssa: "Which car are you going to buy?" |
Albert: Welches Auto wirst du kaufen? |
Albert: [slow] Welches Auto wirst du kaufen? |
Maryssa: The pattern for asking about a choice has four elements. First, "Which car." |
Albert: Welches Auto. |
Maryssa: Second, the verb for "will" conjugated in indicative present. |
Albert: wirst. |
Maryssa: Third, the pronoun, in this case for "you." |
Albert: du. |
Maryssa: And last, the complement, in this case, the verb "to buy." |
Albert: kaufen? |
Maryssa: Altogether, we have... "Which car are you going to buy?" |
Albert: Welches Auto wirst du kaufen? [slow] Welches Auto wirst du kaufen? [normal] Welches Auto wirst du kaufen? |
Maryssa: To ask about a choice in German, please use the conjugated word for "which" followed by a noun. Then put a conjugated verb for "will" or "like" in combination with the subject and add the complement, to end the question right afterward. |
Albert: Welches Auto wirst du kaufen? |
Maryssa: So remember to use the German word for "which", followed by a noun, and then use "will" or "like" in combination with the subject, and put a complement in the end to ask about a choice. |
Maryssa: Here is another example meaning, "Which main dish are you going to eat today?" First, "Which main dish." |
Albert: Welche Hauptspeise. |
Maryssa: Second, the verb for "will" conjugated in indicative present. |
Albert: wirst. |
Maryssa: Third, the pronoun, in this case for "you." |
Albert: du. |
Maryssa: And last, the complement for "to eat today." |
Albert: heute essen? |
Maryssa: Altogether we have... |
Albert: Welche Hauptspeise wirst du heute essen? [slow] Welche Hauptspeise wirst du heute essen? [normal] Welche Hauptspeise wirst du heute essen? |
Maryssa: "Which main dish are you going to eat today?" |
[pause] |
Albert: Welche Hauptspeise wirst du heute essen? |
Maryssa: How do you say — "Which class do you like?" To give you a hint, "class" is... |
Albert: Klasse. [slow] Klasse. [normal] Klasse. |
Maryssa: "Which class do you like?" |
[pause] |
Albert: Welche Klasse magst du? [slow] Welche Klasse magst du? [normal] Welche Klasse magst du? |
[pause] |
Albert: Welche Klasse magst du? |
