Actually, "die" is used for plurals in the nominative (subject) and accusative (direct object) case. "der" is used for plurals in the dative (indirect object) and genetive (possessive) cases.
Die Mädchen sind schön. (The girls are beautiful.)
Ich mache es für die Mädchen. (I do it for the girls.)
Ich gebe der Mädchen Geschenken. (I give the girls presents.)
Das Zimmer der Mädchen ist klein. (The girls' room is small.)
