Hi Katie,
Thank you for your comment.
You are right: "schlecht" means bad in English.
Example: Der Film ist schlecht. - The movie is bad.
The question "Wie geht es dir?" is a standing expression and
in this case schlecht can take on the meaning of "sick", but not only that.
Above, the most common meaning has been used, but "Mir geht es schlecht" can also mean:
I lost my job. My house burned down. etc.
As for using this in a formal situation: I personally wouldn't even use
this sentence with a good friend just like that, because I might make
my friend feel bad too, but I would certainly never say this to a person
I only know on a professional or formal level. 😉
If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us again.
Kind regards,
Reinhard

I thought schlecht meant bad, not sick. I’ve heard people say “nicht schlecht” meaning not bad. Also shouldn’t this be in the formal form too? I don’t know a soul in Germany and don’t know when I would use the familiar form.
Hello Diogo,
Thank you for taking part in our blog here.
Both questions are correct and it only depends
on who you talk to.
"Wie geht es Ihnen?" is the formal version. "Wie geht es Dir?"
is casual and used with people you usually address with "Du"
(friends and family).
If you have any further questions, please let us know.
Kind regards,
Reinhard

Hello Anirudh,
Thank you very much for posting.
Let me correct one little mistake:
"Vielen Dank! Und Sie? Wie geht es Ihnen ?" should be "Vielen Dank! Und Ihnen? Wie geht es Ihnen?"
In both sentences you need the dative form "Ihnen".
Don't hesitate to ask, if you have questions.
Sincerely,
Anne

Heute ich bin wirklich müde. Ich habe so viel zu tun.
(Today I am really tired. I have so much to do.)
@Dee: "Ich bin krank." or "Mir geht es nicht gut." or "Ich fühle mich krank."
Best

Which is correct:
Ich bin krank.
Mir geht es krank.
Hallo Oktunc,
Danke für deinen Kommentar!
Yes, you are right that there are a lot of people that shorten it to "Wie geht's?" and simply reply "gut". It depends on the situation you are in. Amongst friends that would be fine, if you were talking in a more formal situation I would say "wie geht es Ihnen?" and "Mir geht es gut, danke!"
I hope this helps!
Vielen Dank!
