| M: In today’s lesson, we will introduce you to a phrase that you will need on several occasions. While in Germany, there will be lots of food to try, many things to buy and places to see. We all know you want to see the sites and this phrase is essential to plan your days. In German, what time does it open is [Um wieviel Uhr wird geöffnet] The first word is the preposition [Um] and it means at. Let’s see it one more time [Um] Then we have [wieviel] which literally means how much but in this case, what. Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time [wieviel] This is followed by [Uhr] which is a German word for clock but here it is used as time [Uhr] So to recap, we have [Um wieviel Uhr] Literally this means at how much a clock and it should be translated as what time. Next is [wird] which in German is will be. It’s third singular person of the verb [werden] to become. [wird] and finally we have [geöffnet] which means open. So altogether we have [Um wieviel Uhr wird geöffnet] Literally this means at how much a clock will be open and it should be translated as what time does it happen. There is also a more casual way of expressing what time does it happen. Instead of [Um wieviel Uhr] you can also use the adjective [Wann] when. Then we have the following phrase [Wann wird geöffnet] let’s break it down by syllable [Wann wird geöffnet] Now let’s hear it one more time [Wann wird geöffnet] It’s also really important to know when place is closed. The worst thing to encounter is a close sign hanging in front of a place you wanted to see. In German, what time does it close is [Um wieviel Uhr wird geschlossen] Let’s break it down by syllable [Um wieviel Uhr wird geschlossen] Now let’s hear it once again [Um wieviel Uhr wird geschlossen] So as you can see, you have the same structure of the previous phrase [Um wieviel Uhr] is translated as what time and the verb [wird] will be also stays the same. We just have [geschlossen] close in place of [geöffnet] open. Let’s break this word down and hear it one more time [geschlossen] and [geschlossen] So altogether we have [Um wieviel Uhr wird geschlossen] which literally means at how much a clock does it close and it is translated as, at what time does it close. The same pattern [Um wieviel Uhr] can be used in many other situations. In a hotel, when you want to ask, what time is the breakfast served which in German is [Um wieviel Uhr wird Frühstück serviert] What time does the show start [Um wieviel Uhr beginnt die Vorstellung] what time does the train leave [Um wieviel Uhr fährt der Zug ab] what time do we arrive [Um wieviel Uhr kommen wir an] The phrases also work perfectly fine if you use [Wann] instead of [Um wieviel Uhr] |
