German Survival Phrases. Lesson 13, Restaurant part 2. |
Today we will cover getting by at the table. |
First you may have to get a hold of the staff. |
You can accomplish this by saying [Können wir bestellen?] which means can we order. |
[Können wir bestellen?] Let’s break it down by syllable. |
[Können wir bestellen?] Now let’s hear it once again. |
[Können] The first word [Können] means can. |
Let’s break that down and hear it again. |
[Können] The next word [wir] means we in English. |
[wir] The last word is German for order [bestellen] Once the waiter or the waitress comes to your table, you can go with the standard point and this please. |
Now I know we covered this earlier but let’s hear it again. |
In German, this please is [dieses bitte] Let’s break it down by syllable. |
[dieses bitte] Now let’s hear it once again [dieses bitte] The first word [dieses] means this. |
Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time. |
[dieses] This is followed by [bitte] which in English is please. |
[dieses bitte] Now if you are feeling ambitious, you could go for what do you recommend. |
In German, what do you recommend is [Was empfehlen Sie?] Let’s break it down by syllable [Was empfehlen Sie?] Now let’s hear it once again [Was empfehlen Sie?] The first word [was] means what. |
Let’s hear this word slowly one more time. |
[was] This is followed by [empfehlen] which in English is recommend. |
[empfehlen] Finally this is followed by Sie which in English means you. |
[Sie] So altogether we have [Was empfehlen Sie] One more very important word is the word for menu. |
In German, menu is [Speisekarte] Let’s break that down and hear it again [Speisekarte] The word menu in German actually means a set meal with at least three courses. |
So asking for the menu might win you more than you bargained for. |
Okay to close our today’s lesson, we’d like you to practice what you’ve just learned. |
I provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out aloud. |
You have a few seconds before I give you the answer. |
So [Viel Glück] which means good luck in German. |
Can we order [Können wir bestellen] This please [dieses bitte] menu [Speisekarte] what do you recommend [Was empfehlen Sie?] |
That’s going to do it for today. |

Hi Gloria,
Thank you for the comment! Rather say: Als ich in Deutschland war, aß ich im Restaurant. or the last part could also be: ...habe ich im Restaurant gegessen.
Cheers,

Hallo Davi,
Oops it looks like I only posted half of the comment. I will try that again. :D
In a German present tense main sentence, the verb comes second. “Ich gehe heute ins Kino.” (I am going to the cinema today). If there are two or more verbs in one sentence, for example “Ich kann heute nicht ins Kino gehen” (I can’t go to the cinema today) the verbs come second and last in the sentence.
In questions this changes. The verb moves to the first position “Gehst du heute ins Kino?” (Are you going to the cinema today?) However, if there is more than one verb, it comes first and last, so “Kannst”.
Thanks

Verzeihung, können sie über die Deutsch Phrasen Bildung zu sprechen bitte?
Kannst du deutsches Essen essen?
In english = Could you german food eat?
The correct in english would be: Could you eat german food?
I didn't undestand the formation of german phrases. The verb is the last word of the phrase. Is always like that in questions?
Dank

I have not ever been in a German restaurant.
"Was empfehlen Sie?" is good for any kind of recommendation. "empfehlen" simply means to recommend. :-)
You can also be more specific, using a form of "welcher", for example by asking "Welchen Film empfehlen Sie?" (what film do you recommend) or "Welche Band empfehlen Sie?" (what band do you recommend).
Thanks,

The question "Was empfhelen Sie?" can only be used to ask what you recommend for food or can it also be used to ask what someone's recommend about anything, example a movie?
