INTRODUCTION |
Sydney: Hi everyone, I'm Sydney. |
Albert: And I'm Albert. |
Sydney: And welcome to Must-Know German Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 8. Describing emotions. |
Sydney: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for describing someone's emotions or feelings. |
PATTERN |
Sydney: For example, |
Sydney: "You are happy." |
Albert: Du bist glücklich. |
Albert: [slow] Du bist glücklich. |
Sydney: The pattern for describing someone's emotions or feelings has three elements. First, "You" |
Albert: Du. |
Sydney: Second, the conjugated verb for "to be." |
Albert: bist. |
Sydney: Third, the adjective meaning "happy." |
Albert: glücklich. |
Sydney: Altogether, we have... "You are happy." |
Albert: Du bist glücklich. [slow] Du bist glücklich. [normal] Du bist glücklich. |
Sydney: To describe someone’s emotions or feelings, use the pronoun and conjugate the following verb "to be" in the present indicative form according to the pronoun. Then finish up the sentence with an adjective to demonstrate an emotion or feeling. |
Albert: Du bist glücklich. |
Sydney: So remember to use a pronoun and the conjugated verb "to be" right after that and express an emotion or feeling by using an adjective in the end. |
Sydney: Here is another example meaning, "He is tired." First, "He." |
Albert: Er. |
Sydney: Second, the conjugated verb for "to be." |
Albert: ist. |
Sydney: Third, the adjective meaning "tired." |
Albert: müde. |
Sydney: Altogether we have... |
Albert: Er ist müde. [slow] Er ist müde. [normal] Er ist müde. |
Sydney: "He is tired." |
[pause] |
Albert: Er ist müde. |
Sydney: How do you say — "I am sad." To give you a hint, "sad" is... |
Albert: traurig. [slow] traurig. [normal] traurig. |
Sydney: "I am sad." |
[pause] |
Albert: Ich bin traurig. [slow] Ich bin traurig. [normal] Ich bin traurig. |
[pause] |
Albert: Ich bin traurig. |
