INTRODUCTION |
Sydney: Hi everyone, I'm Sydney. |
Albert: And I'm Albert. |
Sydney: And welcome to Must-Know German Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 7. Using the Expression "My favorite." |
Sydney: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for talking about what you like the most. |
PATTERN |
Sydney: For example, |
Sydney: "My favorite food is roasted leg of pork." |
Albert: Mein Lieblingsessen ist Schweinshaxe. |
Albert: [slow] Mein Lieblingsessen ist Schweinshaxe. |
Sydney: The pattern for talking about what you like the most has four elements. First, the conjugated pronoun "my" in nominative singular. |
Albert: Mein. |
Sydney: Second, the noun for "favorite food." |
Albert: Lieblingsessen. |
Sydney: Third, the verb for "to be" conjugated in the third person singular. |
Albert: ist. |
Sydney: And last, the noun for "roasted leg of pork." |
Albert: Schweinshaxe. |
Sydney: Altogether, we have... "My favorite food is roasted leg of pork." |
Albert: Mein Lieblingsessen ist Schweinshaxe. [slow] Mein Lieblingsessen ist Schweinshaxe. [normal] Mein Lieblingsessen ist Schweinshaxe. |
Sydney: If you would like to express in German what you like the most, use a conjugated pronoun in the beginning, followed by a word combination of the word "favorite" and a noun, and then put the word for "is" right after it and conclude the sentence with another noun. |
Albert: Mein Lieblingsessen ist Schweinshaxe. |
Sydney: So remember, to describe what you like just use "I" then "favorite" in conjunction with a noun, and then put "is" and another noun to conclude the sentence. |
Sydney: Here is another example meaning, "My favorite sport is soccer." First, the conjugated pronoun "my" in nominative singular. |
Albert: Mein. |
Sydney: Second, the noun for "favorite sport." |
Albert: Lieblingssport. |
Sydney: Third, the verb for "to be" conjugated in the third person singular. |
Albert: ist. |
Sydney: And last, the noun for "soccer." |
Albert: Fußball. |
Sydney: Altogether we have... |
Albert: Mein Lieblingssport ist Fußball. [slow] Mein Lieblingssport ist Fußball. [normal] Mein Lieblingssport ist Fußball. |
Sydney: "My favorite sport is soccer." |
[pause] |
Albert: Mein Lieblingssport ist Fußball. |
Sydney: How do you say — "My favorite singer is Udo Lindenberg." To give you a hint, "singer" is... |
Albert: Sänger. [slow] Sänger. [normal] Sänger. |
Sydney: "My favorite singer is Udo Lindenberg." |
[pause] |
Albert: Mein Lieblingssänger ist Udo Lindenberg. [slow] Mein Lieblingssänger ist Udo Lindenberg. [normal] Mein Lieblingssänger ist Udo Lindenberg. |
[pause] |
Albert: Mein Lieblingssänger ist Udo Lindenberg. |
