INTRODUCTION
Maryssa: Hi everyone, I'm Maryssa.
Albert: And I'm Albert.
Maryssa: And welcome to Must-Know German Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 24. Talking About the Future.
Maryssa: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for describing something in the future.
PATTERN
Maryssa: For example,
Maryssa: "I will be in the university tomorrow."
Albert: Ich werde morgen in der Universität sein.
Albert: [slow] Ich werde morgen in der Universität sein.
Maryssa: The pattern for describing something in the future has four elements. First, "I will be".
Albert: Ich werde.
Maryssa: Second, the complement for "tomorrow in the university".
Albert: morgen in der Universität.
Maryssa: Third, the conjugated verb for "to be".
Albert: sein.
Maryssa: Altogether, we have... "I will be in the university tomorrow."
Albert: Ich werde morgen in der Universität sein. [slow] Ich werde morgen in der Universität sein. [normal] Ich werde morgen in der Universität sein.
Maryssa: First, use the German form for "I will" which is followed by the complement that can describe the situation in the future, it may be an adverb of time. Then you can add information to reveal any details about what someone or something will do in the future. At last, you need to add a conjugated verb to conclude the sentence.
Albert: Ich werde morgen in der Universität sein.
Maryssa: So remember, to describe something in the future in German, just use the German "I will" followed by the complement and conclude the sentence with a conjugated verb.
Maryssa: Here is another example meaning, "I will someday go to Munich." First, "I will be".
Albert: Ich werde.
Maryssa: Second, the complement for "someday to Munich".
Albert: irgendwann nach München.
Maryssa: Third, the conjugated verb for "to go".
Albert: gehen.
Maryssa: Altogether we have...
Albert: Ich werde irgendwann nach München gehen. [slow] Ich werde irgendwann nach München gehen. [normal] Ich werde irgendwann nach München gehen.
Maryssa: "I will someday go to Munich."
[pause]
Albert: Ich werde irgendwann nach München gehen.
Maryssa: How do you say - "I will travel to Berlin in May." To give you a hint, "May" is...
Albert: Mai. [slow] Mai. [normal] Mai.
Maryssa: "I will travel to Berlin in May."
[pause]
Albert: Ich werde im Mai nach Berlin reisen. [slow] Ich werde im Mai nach Berlin reisen. [normal] Ich werde im Mai nach Berlin reisen.
[pause]
Albert: Ich werde im Mai nach Berlin reisen.
