| Maryssa: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for requesting permission. |
| PATTERN |
| Maryssa: For example, |
| Maryssa: "May I come in?" |
| Albert: Darf ich hereinkommen? |
| Albert: [slow] Darf ich hereinkommen? |
| Maryssa: The pattern for requesting permission has three elements. First, "May I". |
| Albert: Darf ich. |
| Maryssa: Second, the complement for "in" (only in combination with the verb). |
| Albert: herein. |
| Maryssa: Third, the verb for "come". |
| Albert: kommen?. |
| Maryssa: Altogether, we have... "May I come in?" |
| Albert: Darf ich hereinkommen? [slow] Darf ich hereinkommen? [normal] Darf ich hereinkommen? |
| Maryssa: Use the German "may I" to ask for permission. Then, use a complement to emphasize exactly what you want to request permission for by adding more details about what you want to do, such as an adverb, noun, or phrase. Always end the request with a verb in infinitive form. |
| Albert: Darf ich hereinkommen? |
| Maryssa: So remember, to request permission, use the German "may I" followed by a complement and then conclude it with a verb in its infinite form. |
| Maryssa: Here is another example meaning, "May I open the door?" First, "May I". |
| Albert: Darf ich. |
| Maryssa: Second, the complement for "the door". |
| Albert: die Tür. |
| Maryssa: Third, the verb for "open". |
| Albert: öffnen? |
| Maryssa: Altogether we have... |
