INTRODUCTION |
Maryssa: Hi everyone, I'm Maryssa. |
Albert: And I'm Albert. |
Maryssa: And welcome to Must-Know German Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 21. Making Polite Commands. |
Maryssa: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for describing something that needs to be done. |
PATTERN |
Maryssa: For example, |
Maryssa: "You have to clean the car right now." |
Albert: Du musst das Auto jetzt waschen. |
Albert: [slow] Du musst das Auto jetzt waschen. |
Maryssa: The pattern for describing something that needs to be done has four elements. First, "you have to". |
Albert: Du musst. |
Maryssa: Second, the subject for "the car". |
Albert: das Auto. |
Maryssa: Third, the adverb for "now". |
Albert: jetzt. |
Maryssa: And last, the verb for "to clean". |
Albert: waschen. |
Maryssa: Altogether, we have... "You have to clean the car right now." |
Albert: Du musst das Auto jetzt waschen. [slow] Du musst das Auto jetzt waschen. [normal] Du musst das Auto jetzt waschen. |
Maryssa: Start with the German phrase for "You have to", the verb "have" is conjugated in the second person singular and the pronoun "you" comes after it. Then add a subject and an adverb to emphasize the urgency. At the end of the sentence, you have to add a verb in its infinite form. |
Albert: Du musst das Auto jetzt waschen. |
Maryssa: So remember to just use the German "you have to" followed by the subject and adverb and then conclude the sentence with a verb in its infinitive form to describe something that needs to be done. |
Maryssa: Here is another example meaning, "You have to cook the food now." First, "you have to". |
Albert: Du musst. |
Maryssa: Second, the subject for "the food". |
Albert: das Essen. |
Maryssa: Third, the adverb for "now". |
Albert: jetzt. |
Maryssa: And last, the verb for "to cook". |
Albert: kochen. |
Maryssa: Altogether we have... |
Albert: Du musst das Essen jetzt kochen. [slow] Du musst das Essen jetzt kochen. [normal] Du musst das Essen jetzt kochen. |
Maryssa: "You have to cook the food now." |
[pause] |
Albert: Du musst das Essen jetzt kochen. |
Maryssa: How do you say - "You have to do your homework now." To give you a hint, "homework" is... |
Albert: Hausaufgaben. [slow] Hausaufgaben. [normal] Hausaufgaben. |
Maryssa: "You have to do your homework now." |
[pause] |
Albert: Du musst deine Hausaufgaben jetzt machen. [slow] Du musst deine Hausaufgaben jetzt machen. [normal] Du musst deine Hausaufgaben jetzt machen. |
[pause] |
Albert: Du musst deine Hausaufgaben jetzt machen. |
