Maryssa: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for discussing likes. |
PATTERN |
Maryssa: For example, |
Maryssa: "I like to swim in the swimming pool." |
Albert: Ich mag es im Schwimmbad zu schwimmen. |
Albert: [slow] Ich mag es im Schwimmbad zu schwimmen. |
Maryssa: The pattern for discussing likes has three elements. First, "I like to". Literally, “I like it.” |
Albert: Ich mag es. |
Maryssa: Second, the complement for "in the swimming pool to". |
Albert: im Schwimmbad zu. |
Maryssa: Third, the verb for "swimming". |
Albert: schwimmen. |
Maryssa: Altogether, we have... "I like to swim in the swimming pool." |
Albert: Ich mag es im Schwimmbad zu schwimmen. [slow] Ich mag es im Schwimmbad zu schwimmen. [normal] Ich mag es im Schwimmbad zu schwimmen. |
Maryssa: To discuss likes in German, you can use the German phrase for "I like it" then write down a complement that describes the thing you like and conclude it with a suitable verb in its infinite form. |
Albert: Ich mag es im Schwimmbad zu schwimmen. |
Maryssa: So remember to discuss likes in German use the phrase for "I like it" then a suitable complement and conclude it with a verb in the infinite form. |
Maryssa: Here is another example meaning, "I like to ride my bicycle to school." First, "I like to". Literally, “I like it.” |

Maryssa: Second, the complement for "with the bicycle to school to". |
Albert: mit dem Fahrrad zur Schule zu. |
Maryssa: Third, the verb for "riding". |
Albert: fahren. |
