INTRODUCTION
Maryssa: Hi everyone, I'm Maryssa.
Albert: And I'm Albert.
Maryssa: And welcome to Must-Know German Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 18. Giving Advice.
Maryssa: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for giving advice.
PATTERN
Maryssa: For example,
Maryssa: "You should work more."
Albert: Du solltest mehr arbeiten.
Albert: [slow] Du solltest mehr arbeiten.
Maryssa: The pattern for giving advice has three elements. First, "You should".
Albert: Du solltest.
Maryssa: Second, the adverb for "more".
Albert: mehr.
Maryssa: Third, the verb for "to work".
Albert: arbeiten.
Maryssa: Altogether, we have... "You should work more."
Albert: Du solltest mehr arbeiten. [slow] Du solltest mehr arbeiten. [normal] Du solltest mehr arbeiten.
Maryssa: To give advice in German, you need to use the German phrase for "you should" in the beginning, followed by the adverb you intend to use. Then to conclude, add the correct verb in it's infinitive tense.
Albert: Du solltest mehr arbeiten.
Maryssa: So remember, for giving advice, use the German word for "you should", followed by an adverb, and end the sentence with a verb.
Maryssa: Here is another example meaning, "You should wake up earlier." First, "You should".
Albert: Du solltest.
Maryssa: Second, the adverb for "earlier".
Albert: früher.
Maryssa: Third, the verb for "to wake up".
Albert: aufstehen.
Maryssa: Altogether we have...
Albert: Du solltest früher aufstehen. [slow] Du solltest früher aufstehen. [normal] Du solltest früher aufstehen.
Maryssa: "You should wake up earlier."
[pause]
Albert: Du solltest früher aufstehen.
Maryssa: How do you say - "You should think faster." To give you a hint, "to think " is...
Albert: denken. [slow] denken. [normal] denken.
Maryssa: "You should think faster."
[pause]
Albert: Du solltest schneller denken. [slow] Du solltest schneller denken. [normal] Du solltest schneller denken.
[pause]
Albert: Du solltest schneller denken.

Maryssa: Let's review the sentences from this lesson. I will give you the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud in German. Here we go.
