INTRODUCTION |
Maryssa: Hi everyone, I'm Maryssa. |
Albert: And I'm Albert. |
Maryssa: And welcome to Must-Know German Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 17. Proposing an Activity. |
Maryssa: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for proposing something. |
PATTERN |
Maryssa: For example, |
Maryssa: "Let’s play board games." |
Albert: Lass uns Brettspiele spielen. |
Albert: [slow] Lass uns Brettspiele spielen. |
Maryssa: The pattern for proposing something has three elements. First, "Let's". |
Albert: Lass uns. |
Maryssa: Second, the subject for "board games". |
Albert: Brettspiele. |
Maryssa: Third, the verb in infinitive tense for "to play". |
Albert: spielen. |
Maryssa: Altogether, we have... "Let’s play board games." |
Albert: Lass uns Brettspiele spielen. [slow] Lass uns Brettspiele spielen. [normal] Lass uns Brettspiele spielen. |
Maryssa: To propose something in German, start with the German phrase for "let's", then add the subject you want to talk about and finally add the verb, in its infinitive form, to end the sentence. |
Albert: Lass uns Brettspiele spielen. |
Maryssa: So remember to use the German "let's" in the beginning, then add a suitable subject and end it with the verb. |
Maryssa: Here is another example meaning, "Let's go to the cinema." First, "Let's". |
Albert: Lass uns. |
Maryssa: Second, the subject for "to the cinema". |
Albert: ins Kino. |
Maryssa: Third, the verb in infinitive tense for "to go". |
Albert: gehen. |
Maryssa: Altogether we have... |
Albert: Lass uns ins Kino gehen. [slow] Lass uns ins Kino gehen. [normal] Lass uns ins Kino gehen. |
Maryssa: "Let's go to the cinema." |
[pause] |
Albert: Lass uns ins Kino gehen. |
Maryssa: How do you say - "Let's go shopping." To give you a hint, "shopping" is... |
Albert: einkaufen. [slow] einkaufen. [normal] einkaufen. |
Maryssa: "Let's go shopping." |
[pause] |
Albert: Lass uns einkaufen gehen. [slow] Lass uns einkaufen gehen. [normal] Lass uns einkaufen gehen. |
[pause] |
Albert: Lass uns einkaufen gehen. |
