INTRODUCTION
Maryssa: Hi everyone, I'm Maryssa.
Albert: And I'm Albert.
Maryssa: And welcome to Must-Know German Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 16. Asking About Manner.
Maryssa: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for asking about manner.
PATTERN
Maryssa: For example,
Maryssa: "How was the Christmas party?"
Albert: Wie war die Weihnachtsfeier?
Albert: [slow] Wie war die Weihnachtsfeier?
Maryssa: The pattern for asking about manner has three elements. First, "How".
Albert: Wie.
Maryssa: Second, the conjugated verb for "to be" in the past tense...
Albert: war.
Maryssa: Third, the subject for "the Christmas party".
Albert: die Weihnachtsfeier?.
Maryssa: Altogether, we have... "How was the Christmas party?"
Albert: Wie war die Weihnachtsfeier? [slow] Wie war die Weihnachtsfeier? [normal] Wie war die Weihnachtsfeier?
Maryssa: First you have the adverb meaning "how," then the conjugated verb according to the pronoun, followed by the subject, which you want to ask a question about.
Albert: Wie war die Weihnachtsfeier?
Maryssa: So remember to use "how" then a suitable conjugated verb and then put the subject right behind it.
Maryssa: Here is another example meaning, "How was your birthday?" First, "How".
Albert: Wie.
Maryssa: Second, the conjugated verb for "to be" in the past tense...
Albert: war.
Maryssa: Third, the subject for "your birthday".
Albert: dein Geburtstag?
Maryssa: Altogether we have...
Albert: Wie war dein Geburtstag? [slow] Wie war dein Geburtstag? [normal] Wie war dein Geburtstag?
Maryssa: "How was your birthday?"
[pause]
Albert: Wie war dein Geburtstag?
Maryssa: How do you say - "How was the class?" To give you a hint, "class" is...
Albert: Unterricht. [slow] Unterricht. [normal] Unterricht.
Maryssa: "How was the class?"
[pause]
Albert: Wie war der Unterricht? [slow] Wie war der Unterricht? [normal] Wie war der Unterricht?
[pause]
Albert: Wie war der Unterricht?
