INTRODUCTION |
Maryssa: Hi everyone, I'm Maryssa. |
Albert: And I'm Albert. |
Maryssa: And welcome to Must-Know German Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 15. Asking About Ownership. |
Maryssa: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for asking about ownership. |
PATTERN |
Maryssa: For example, |
Maryssa: "Whose socks are these?" |
Albert: Wessen Socken sind diese? |
Albert: [slow] Wessen Socken sind diese? |
Maryssa: The pattern for asking about ownership has four elements. First, "Whose". |
Albert: Wessen. |
Maryssa: Second, "socks". |
Albert: Socken. |
Maryssa: Third, the conjugated verb for "to be" meaning "are" in this case... |
Albert: sind. |
Maryssa: And last, "these". |
Albert: diese? |
Maryssa: Altogether, we have... "Whose socks are these?" |
Albert: Wessen Socken sind diese? [slow] Wessen Socken sind diese? [normal] Wessen Socken sind diese? |
Maryssa: Start with the conjugated question word "whose", followed by the subject you would like to ask about, and then add the conjugated verb for "to be". Right after that, please end the question with the German word for "this/these". |
Albert: Wessen Socken sind diese? |
Maryssa: So remember when you want to ask about the ownership, to use "whose", then add the subject and the conjugated verb for "to be", and to end the question, add "this/these". |
Maryssa: Here is another example meaning, "Whose car is this?" First, "Whose". |
Albert: Wessen. |
Maryssa: Second, "car". |
Albert: Auto. |
Maryssa: Third, the verb for "to be" conjugated in the third person singular. |
Albert: ist. |
Maryssa: And last, "this". |
Albert: dies? |
Maryssa: Altogether we have... |
Albert: Wessen Auto ist dies? [slow] Wessen Auto ist dies? [normal] Wessen Auto ist dies? |
Maryssa: "Whose car is this?" |
[pause] |
Albert: Wessen Auto ist dies? |
Maryssa: How do you say - "Whose shoes are these?" To give you a hint, "shoes" is... |
Albert: Schuhe. [slow] Schuhe. [normal] Schuhe. |
Maryssa: "Whose shoes are these?" |
[pause] |
Albert: Wessen Schuhe sind diese? [slow] Wessen Schuhe sind diese? [normal] Wessen Schuhe sind diese? |
[pause] |
Albert: Wessen Schuhe sind diese? |
