INTRODUCTION
Sydney: Hi everyone, I'm Sydney.
Albert: And I'm Albert.
Sydney: And welcome to Must-Know German Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 1. Talking about your profession.
Sydney: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for talking about your profession.
PATTERN
Sydney: For example,
Sydney: "I'm a doctor."
Albert: Ich bin Arzt.
Albert: [slow] Ich bin Arzt.
Sydney: The pattern for talking about your profession has two elements. First, the pronoun, in this case "I", followed by the verb "to be" in the first person singular.
Albert: Ich bin.
Sydney: Second, your profession, in this case "doctor", referring to a male doctor.
Albert: Arzt.
Sydney: Altogether, we have... "I'm a doctor."
Albert: Ich bin Arzt. [slow] Ich bin Arzt. [normal] Ich bin Arzt.
Sydney: In German, you use the pronoun at first, which is followed by the conjugated verb "to be." It needs to be conjugated according to the pronoun. Right afterward comes the profession, which has to fit with the gender and number. Compared to English, there is no article in between the first and the second element.
Albert: Ich bin Arzt.
Sydney: So remember that if you want to tell someone about your profession, just use "I" plus the conjugated verb for "to be" and add the profession. Be aware of the speaker's gender and number.
Sydney: Here is another example meaning, "I'm a kindergarten teacher." First, the pronoun, in this case "I", followed by the verb "to be" in the first person singular.
Albert: Ich bin.
Sydney: Second, your profession, in this case "kindergarten teacher", referring to a male kindergarten teacher.
Albert: Kindergärtner.
Sydney: Altogether we have...
Albert: Ich bin Kindergärtner. [slow] Ich bin Kindergärtner. [normal] Ich bin Kindergärtner.
Sydney: "I'm a kindergarten teacher."
[pause]
Albert: Ich bin Kindergärtner.
Sydney: How do you say - "I am a butcher." To give you a hint, "butcher" is...
Albert: Metzger. [slow] Metzger. [normal] Metzger.
Sydney: "I am a butcher."
[pause]
Albert: Ich bin Metzger. [slow] Ich bin Metzger. [normal] Ich bin Metzger.
[pause]
Albert: Ich bin Metzger.
