Lesson Transcript

Welcome to Can-Do German by GermanPod101.com.
In this lesson, you’ll learn how to give your e-mail address in German.
For example, "My email is address aylin@innolang.com." is
Meine E-Mail-Adresse ist aylin@innolang.com.
Aylin Ahrens is at city hall registering her address.
A civil servant is asking for her email address.
Before you hear their conversation, let’s preview some of its key components.
E-Mail-Adresse
"E-mail address"
E-Mail-Adresse
E-Mail-Adresse
Listen to the conversation, and focus on the response.
Note: the civil servant in this conversation uses formal German.
Ready?
Ihre E-Mail-Adresse, bitte.
Meine E-Mail-Adresse ist aylin@innolang.com.
Once more with the English translation.
Ihre E-Mail- Adresse, bitte.
"Your email address, please."
Meine E-Mail-Adresse ist aylin@innolang.com.
"My email is aylin@innolang.com."
Let's break down the conversation.
Do you remember how the civil servant says,
"Your email address, please."
Ihre E-Mail- Adresse, bitte.
Let’s start with E-Mail-Adresse, "e-mail address." E-Mail-Addresse.
Note, in German, words can sometimes be joined together to create a new word. E-Mail-Adresse is E-Mail, "e-mail," and Adresse, "address," together.
Together it's E-Mail-Adresse. "E-mail address." E-Mail-Adresse.
In German, all nouns have grammatical gender and are either singular or plural. E-Mail-Adresse is feminine and singular — a fact that determines the form of other words in the sentence.
Before this is Ihre, meaning "your" in this formal context. Ihre.
Ihre is feminine singular to agree with E-Mail-Adresse.
Note Ihre fundamentally means "their," but it’s also a formal way to say "your" when speaking to someone directly using formal German. Ihre. Ihre.
Now, you might be more familiar with deine, an informal word for "your," as in deine E-Mail-Adresse, an informal way to say "your e-mail address." As this is a city office setting, the formal form, Ihre, is more appropriate.
Together, Ihre E-Mail-Adresse. "Your e-mail address." Ihre E-Mail-Adresse.
Last is bitte, meaning "please" in this context. Bitte. Bitte.
All together, it’s Ihre E-Mail-Adresse, bitte. "Your e-mail address, please."
Ihre E-Mail-Adresse, bitte.
Remember this request. You’ll hear it again later.
Let’s take a closer look at the response.
Do you remember how Aylin says,
"My email is aylin@innolang.com."
Meine E-Mail-Adresse ist aylin@innolang.com.
Do you remember how to say "e-mail address?"
E-Mail-Adresse, "e-mail address." E-Mail-Adresse.
Before this is meine, "my." Meine. Meine.
Meine is feminine singular to agree with E-Mail-Adresse.
Together it’s meine E-Mail-Adresse, "My e-mail address." Meine E-Mail-Adresse.
Next is ist, "is," as in "my e-mail address is." Ist. Ist.
Ist is from the verb sein, meaning "to be." Sein.
All together, it’s Meine E-Mail-Adresse ist… "My e-mail address is.…" Meine E-Mail-Adresse ist…
Next is Aylin’s e-mail address: aylin@innolang.com.
Note how Aylin says her e-mail address.
First is Aylin’s name spelled out: a ypsilon el ieh en.
Next is the "at sign," which is At-Zeichen in German. At-Zeichen. At-Zeichen.
Note, when talking about e-mail addresses, At-Zeichen is usually shortened to at.
After this is the domain name, innolang, pronounced in German. Innolang.
And last is Punkt com, "dot com." Punkt com. Punkt com.
All together, it’s Meine E-Mail-Adresse ist aylin@innolang.com.
"My email is aylin@innolang.com.."
Meine E-Mail-Adresse ist aylin@innolang.com.
The pattern is
Meine E-Mail-Adresse ist E-MAIL ADDRESS.
"My e-mail address is E-MAIL ADDRESS."
Meine E-Mail-Adresse ist E-MAIL ADDRESS.
To use this pattern, simply replace the {E-MAIL ADDRESS} placeholder with your e-mail address.
Imagine your e-mail address is hannah@innolang.com. ha a en en a ha at innolang Punkt com.
Say
"My email is hannah@innolang.com."
Ready?
Meine E-Mail-Adresse ist hannah@innolang.com.
"My email is hannah@innolang.com."
Meine E-Mail-Adresse ist hannah@innolang.com.
When giving your e-mail address in German, if the domain name is well-known, you don’t need to spell it out. For example, if your e-mail address has the domain, "gmail," as in "gmail.com," you can just say, gmail.
Outside of well-known domain names, however, it will usually be necessary to spell it out.
Again, the key pattern is
Meine E-Mail-Adresse ist E-MAIL ADDRESS.
"My e-mail address is E-MAIL ADDRESS."
Meine E-Mail-Adresse ist E-MAIL ADDRESS.
Let's look at some examples.
Listen and repeat or speak along with the native speakers.
Meine E-Mail-Adresse ist aylin@innolang.com.
"My email is aylin@innolang.com."
Meine E-Mail-Adresse ist aylin@innolang.com.
Meine E-Mail-Adresse ist hannah@innolang.com.
"My email is hannah@innolang.com."
Meine E-Mail-Adresse ist hannah@innolang.com.
Meine E-Mail-Adresse ist aron@innolang.com.
"My email is aron@innolang.com."
Meine E-Mail-Adresse ist aron@innolang.com.
Meine E-Mail-Adresse ist finja@innolang.com.
"My email is finja@innolang.com."
Meine E-Mail-Adresse ist finja@innolang.com.
katrin@innolang.com.
"katrin@innolang.com."
katrin@innolang.com.
Did you notice how the last speaker omitted Meine E-Mail-Adresse?
katrin@innolang.com.
"katrin@innolang.com."
When directly responding to a request, it’s often possible to omit part of the response.
Here, by simply giving your e-mail address, there’s no need to say Meine E-Mail-Adresse ist, "My e-mail address is."
The pattern is
E-MAIL ADDRESS.
You should be aware of this shortcut, but you won’t need it for this lesson.
Let's review.
Respond to the prompts by speaking aloud. Then repeat after the native speakers, focusing on pronunciation.
