Eric: Welcome to 3-Minute German Season 1, Lesson 15 - 'Where are you?' In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask where someone is in German.

Eric: Here's the informal way to ask 'Where are you?' in German.
Albert: [Normal] Wo bist du?
Eric: First is a word meaning 'where'
Albert: [Normal] Wo [Slow] Wo
Eric: Then comes the word meaning 'are, to be'
Albert: [Normal] bist [Slow] bist
Eric: Last is the word meaning 'you'
Albert: [Normal] du [Slow] du
Eric: Note the rising intonation. Listen again to the informal question meaning 'Where are you?'
Albert: [Slow] Wo bist du? [Normal] Wo bist du?
Eric: If you're speaking to a stranger, you want to use the formal version of this question. Here's the formal way to ask, 'Where are you?'
Albert: [Normal] Wo sind Sie?
Eric: First is a word meaning 'where'

Eric: Next comes the word meaning 'are'
Albert: [Normal] sind [Slow] sind

Albert: Using the verb sein, you can create a convenient question to use when you are lost in the street. For example,

means “I don’t know where I am, can you help me please?”
