Gay Marriage and/or retirement in Germany

Postby cotongrl » October 30th, 2009 1:32 pm

Since gay men and lesbians are legally able to marry in Germany, if you are a gay American and you marry a gay German, what is your status as regards staying in Germany legally? This is probably an usual question, but thanks for any helpful answers.

Also, if you are a retirement age American and want to retire to Germany, how much money does the government want you to have to prove your solvency?

gay marriage is (sadly) not possible in Germany, you can only have a registered partnership. If an American and a German have such a registered partnership the American partner has a residence permit to stay legally in Germany.

The only way for two gay people to be married is when one partner in a heterosexual marriage had a sex change.

Thanks, Salivia, for the first explanation.

About retirement: the law does not specify an amount, so it will depend on your case worker and also how much money you have in an account / how much you receive monthly. A German immigration lawyer would probably know some cases that made it or not.
