F: German Survival Phrases. Lesson 58, High Frequency Adjectives. |
M: In today’s lesson, we will cover some high frequency adjectives to help you express yourself in a variety of situations. In German, it’s delicious is [Es ist lecker] Let’s break this phrase down by syllable and listen to it one more time [Es ist lecker] The first word [Es ist lecker] means it. It’s the third person singular neutral pronoun. Let’s hear this word once more [Es] This is followed by [ist] which in English means is [ist] and finally we have the adjective in this case [lecker] delicious. Let’s break it down by syllable [lecker] And now let’s see it once more [lecker] Altogether we have [Es ist lecker] which literally means it is delicious. So to recap, in German when describing something, you use the neutral pronoun, third person singular [Es] it and the verb [ist] to be also third person singular and then the adjective. It’s pretty simple, isn’t it? Okay now let’s go over some other adjectives that you can use with the pattern just introduced. Let’s try hot, hot as spicy. In German, it’s hot is [Es ist scharf] The word for hot is [scharf] Let’s hear it once again [scharf] Instead if you are referring to the weather, it’s hot in German is [Es ist heiß] The word for hot in this case is [heiß] The opposite is [Es ist kalt] So the word for cold in German is [kalt] and the phrase means, it is cold [Es ist kalt] Let’s think of some more adjectives. In German, it’s far is [Es ist weit entfernt] the word for far is [weit] And we use [entfernt] which can be translated as away to indicate that something is far away. So the phrase [Es ist weit entfernt] literally means, it is far away. The opposite it’s near is [Es ist nah] The word for near is [nah] If you are talking about a person, there are some main adjectives we need to cover like tall [groß] short [klein] fat [dick] thin [dünn]. If you are talking about a girl, she is beautiful in German is [Sie ist schön] while if you are talking about a man, you would say [Er ist schön] It’s more common though to use the phrase, she looks pretty. In German [Sie sieht bezaubernd aus] the first word of this phrase [Sie] is the third person feminine pronoun and it means she and this is followed by [sieht] looks. It’s one part of the verb [aussehen] to look. Let’s break down this word and listen to it one more time [sieht] Next is the adjective [bezaubernd] pretty. [bezaubernd] And finally we have the prefix [aus] of the verb [aussehen]. So altogether we have [Sie sieht bezaubernd aus] Literally this means she looks pretty. Now let’s take a look at the negative. In German, when referring to food that is not spicy, you can say [Es ist nicht scharf] it’s not hot. The negation is formed by [nicht] not plus the pattern we have just seen [Es ist scharf] The negation is then placed between the conjugated verb [ist] is and the adjectives. So altogether we have [Es ist nicht scharf] It is not hot. And with this I hope we could introduce you to some interesting adjectives. Thanks for listening [Auf Wiedersehen] |
Okay to close our today’s lesson, we would like you to practice what you’ve just learned. I will provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out aloud. You have a few seconds before I give you the answer. So [Viel Glück] which means good luck in German. |
