| Chuck: In this lesson, you will learn how to use the German word sollen. |
| Judith: This conversation takes place at the reception of a Munich hotel. |

| Judith: Okay I think this just calls for a cultural point on money because it’s a very important issue, a very important cultural difference here. |
| Chuck: Will I get money now? |
| Judith: No. |
| Chuck: Huh! Money is a sore issue in Germany. You will find that people don’t readily talk about it no matter whether they are rich or poor and you just can’t ask anyone how much they earn. |
| Judith: Yeah, reicht das Geld? like do you earn enough? is about the closest you can go. Don’t ask about the income of other family members either. |
| Chuck: In surveys where the household income has a big role, companies usually try to avoid this dilemma by giving a choice of wide income brackets and still people might lie about this. |
| Judith: Yeah rich people might claim to be poor vice versa. In Germany, it’s not chic to show that you are rich. |
| Chuck: Also you should avoid asking how much something costs like if you are at someone’s house or something. In a store, it is perfectly fine of course. It’s not quite as taboo as asking about someone’s income but still it’s not nice. |
| Judith: Yeah and by the same token, you should avoid saying how much something cost that you bought because it might be perceived as flaunting your wealth. |

| Judith: The first word is Weckanruf. |

| Judith: It’s a combination of wecken. |
| Chuck: To wake someone up |
| Judith: And Anruf. |

| Judith: And there is also a phrase which is really hard to translate, Mir fällt etwas ein. |
| Chuck: A thought comes to me. |
| Judith: Yeah it’s like I have an idea but if you look at the grammar, mir fällt etwas ein is literally more like to me falls something in. So something falls into me if you want but it means I have an idea. |

| Chuck: The focus of this lesson is the verb sollen. |
| Judith: Sollen, shall is another model verb like müssen and dürfen and können. The difference is that this one doesn’t change its vowel. |
| Chuck: What’s left is just the missing T for the third person singular and the missing E for the first person singular. Judith, could you give our listeners a direct comparison of sollen and a regular German verb like maybe arbeiten. |
| Judith: Sure. So you start with ich soll as in ich arbeite, note the missing E, ich soll, then du sollst, du arbeitest, same difference, er soll, er arbeitet, missing T, soll, not sollt, er soll, wir sollen, wir arbeiten, ihr sollt, ihr arbeitet, sie sollen, sie arbeiten so the rest of the forms are identical. |
